Shift work affecting sleep patterns

💬 General Discussion

How do you all manage the changing shift patterns? I've been on drivers rota for 6 months now and still struggling with the early turns. Some mornings I feel completely shattered before I even start.

Any tips for getting better sleep when you're switching between early, late, and night shifts?

It takes time to adjust. I've been doing shifts for 2 years and still struggle sometimes with the transition between patterns.

Blackout blinds were a game changer for me. Can't recommend them enough for night shift sleep.

I try to keep the same sleep pattern even on rest days. Helps my body clock adjust better.

@nightshift - I tried that but found I missed too much family time. Now I just accept I'll be knackered for the first day of each new pattern!

No caffeine after 2pm on early turn days. Makes a huge difference to sleep quality.

Melatonin supplements helped me initially. Worth speaking to your GP if it's really affecting you.

I find the early-to-late transition the hardest. Body just can't cope with the sudden change!

@guardtodriver - same! The 24 hours between finishing an early and starting a late is just not enough.

Some people swear by power naps. I can't do them personally but might work for you.

Fitness helps. Regular exercise makes it easier to sleep whenever you need to.

It does get easier with time. Your body adapts eventually. First 6 months are the worst.
