Safety & Compliancehard

Tell me about a time you had to follow strict procedures, even when it made your work more difficult.

Difficulty: hard • Category: Safety & Compliance

Suggested Answer

In my previous role, we had strict checklists for equipment inspections. Once, during a particularly busy period, I was tempted to skip a routine check to save time. However, I remembered that procedures exist for a reason and completed the full inspection. I discovered a small fault that, if left unchecked, could have caused significant delays and safety issues later.

STAR Method Example

Situation:

During a particularly busy period at my previous role, we were under pressure to meet tight deadlines. I was responsible for carrying out routine equipment checks using a detailed checklist before each shift, a process that took roughly twenty minutes.

Task:

I needed to complete the full equipment inspection despite the time pressure, knowing that skipping steps could lead to missed faults and potential safety incidents.

Action:

I resisted the temptation to rush and methodically worked through every item on the checklist. Partway through, I noticed a small crack in a hydraulic hose fitting that would have been easy to miss if I had been cutting corners. I reported it immediately, tagged the equipment out of service, and arranged for a replacement before the next shift began.

Result:

The cracked fitting was replaced before it could fail, preventing what my manager estimated would have been a costly breakdown and potential injury risk. The experience was shared as a learning example at our next team briefing, and it strengthened my conviction that procedures exist for a reason.

Tips

  • Show you understand why procedures exist
  • Demonstrate integrity in following rules
  • Provide an example where following procedures paid off
  • Don't complain about the inconvenience
