LNER vs Avanti - which is better for new drivers?

🏢 Company-Specific

I've been offered positions with both LNER and Avanti and I'm trying to decide which to go for. I know they're both excellent companies but I'm wondering about:

  • Training quality
  • Routes you work (would prefer variety)
  • Base options
  • Overall culture

Anyone have experience with either?

I work for Avanti and can honestly say it's a great company to work for. The training at Crewe is excellent and you get a good mix of routes once you're passed out.

LNER driver here - equally happy with my choice. York is a brilliant base and the ECML is a fantastic route to work. Longest trips are the Edinburgh runs.

What's the roster pattern like at each? I've heard Avanti do 4-on 2-off?

@northern.driver - yes, Avanti is generally 4 on 2 off. The shifts can be long though - some of the Scotland turns are 12+ hours.

LNER is similar - 4 on 2 off mainly. Depends on your depot though. Leeds might be different to York or London.

What about pay? Any difference in starting rates?

@guardtodriver - starting pay is pretty similar across TOCs. Asgawa rates are standard. Where you'll see differences is in overtime and allowances.

Avanti have some good position moves if you're willing to travel. I've done a few Manchester to Scotland trips that were proper scenic.

LNER do the same - you can get positioned at Edinburgh and work back down. Keeps the job interesting!

I chose Avanti because Crewe is closer to home for me. But if I lived further north, LNER would have been the choice.

Both are top tier TOCs. You won't go wrong with either. My advice would be to pick based on location - you don't want a massive commute.

What's the training length at each?

@nightshift - Avanti training is about 12 months. 9 months classroom then 3 months on-route with a mentor.

LNER is similar - around 12 months total. York training centre is decent, good facilities.

Which has better long-term prospects? I'm thinking about progression eventually.
