How would you handle a signal failure or technical issue while driving?
Difficulty: hard • Category: Train Driver Specific
Suggested Answer
I would immediately stop the train in accordance with procedures, assess the situation calmly, and contact control for instructions. I would not attempt to diagnose or fix the issue beyond my training. I would keep passengers informed if appropriate. Safety and following proper protocols would be my only priorities.
STAR Method Example
Imagine I am driving a service and the approach signal changes to a cautionary aspect unexpectedly. As I get closer, the next signal displays a danger aspect, meaning I must stop. On further observation, I notice the signalling appears irregular and there may be a fault.
I needed to respond in accordance with the rule book, ensure the safety of my train and passengers, and communicate appropriately without attempting to diagnose the issue beyond my competence.
I would bring the train to a controlled stop before the danger signal, following the normal braking procedure. I would then contact the signaller to report my position and the irregular signalling. I would not attempt to move the train or investigate the signal myself. If passengers needed to be informed, I would make a calm, brief announcement explaining that we were holding at a signal and would move when it was safe to do so.
By stopping the train promptly and contacting the signaller, the situation would be managed safely and the signalling team could investigate and resolve the fault. Passengers would remain calm because the communication was clear and professional. This approach ensures that I never act outside my training and that safety remains the absolute priority.
