Why do you want to become a train driver?

A few years ago, I began researching careers that combined hands-on technical skill with a strong safety culture and public service. I have always been fascinated by the railway and the level of responsibility that comes with safely transporting hundreds of people every day.

I needed to satisfy myself that this career genuinely matched my skills and values before committing to the application process.

I spent several months reading about the day-to-day realities of train driving, including the structured procedures, shift patterns, and continuous assessment. I reached out to two serving drivers who kindly shared their experiences. I also visited heritage railways and attended an open day at a train operating company to learn more about the training pathway and the safety culture.

My research confirmed that this is exactly the type of role I am suited to. I thrive in structured environments, I enjoy learning technical procedures, and I am motivated by the knowledge that my work directly affects people's safety. I am under no illusions about the challenges, but I am genuinely excited about building a long-term career in this field.
