What steps have you taken to prepare for this career?

When I first started considering a career as a train driver, I knew very little about what the job truly involved day to day. I did not want to go into an application unprepared, so I set about finding out as much as I could.

I needed to demonstrate to myself and to any future employer that I had taken concrete steps to understand and prepare for this career, not just developed a vague interest.

I read everything I could find about the role, including industry publications and official resources from train operating companies. I spoke to two serving drivers who shared honest insights about the realities of the job, both rewarding and challenging. I studied the basics of signalling, traction types, and route learning. On a personal level, I adjusted my daily routine to simulate early shift patterns, going to bed and waking earlier, to test whether I could sustain that lifestyle.

This preparation gave me a clear, realistic picture of the career and confirmed my enthusiasm. I now understand what I am signing up for, from the rigorous training to the ongoing assessments and shift work. I feel confident walking into this process knowing I have done my homework thoroughly.
